On this topic, I am undertaking some initial investigations on
"repository engineering" with an Australian colleague (Prof David
Lowe, University of Technology, Sydney).
Our aim is to use web engineering techniques to produce models for "a
repository" and "an institution". These models would be used in the
requirements phase for repository planning and maintenance. The
models should be amenable to comparison, so that important
institutional activities and goals can be projected on to the
repository processes (e.g. open access, research data capture) and
repository functionality can be used to modify institutional
workflows (e.g. research assessment, thesis submission).
Hopefully, that will help to make explicit the reciprocal
relationships between the repository's functionality and the
institution's activities, and to help make informed decisions about
the extent of the repository's responsibilities.
Let me know if you are interested, and I will keep people informed.
