Dear All,
Thank you to those of you who have responded to my questions on HLC. Some of
you seem to have misunderstood my question, perhaps I should have been a
little more specific. We have all the generic info on setting up HLCs and
general stuff on the potential applications.
What I really wanted to know was Do you use your HLC on a daily, weekly,
monthly basis or hardly ever? What information do you extract from it? Do
you find it easy to search the metadata for specific types of information?
Is there any information, that you wish had been added into the metadata
when the project had been set up? I assume that everyone uses their HLC when
doing FEPs, but what about other types of searches? Does your Planning
Archaeologist use it regularly? Have you had members of the public or
students using it for their research? If you don't really use it, why not?
We are currently grappling with the finer details. For example, we are just
trying to decide how big something has to be to stop being a feature and
start being a landscape character. Most other HLCs seem to be somewhere
between 1 hectare and 6. Do those of you using the HLC think that 1 hectare
is too detailed? or that 6 hectares is too vague? This will obviously depend
on how you use it. We are also trying to decide how best to record the data
so that it can be easily searched. Most HLCs are attached to an Access
database or similar, but West Berks AONB simply uses the attributes table in
the GIS to store the data, which seems to be working for them. Having seen
their project set up this way, we are quite attracted to the idea. These
are the kinds of things that I was hoping to get feed back on.
Adam Mindykowski, our Countryside Advisor, is currently writing the Project
Design, and we want a little direction as to how people are using their
HLCs, so that we can tailor our design better. No point in coming up with a
project, that people aren't going to be able to use successfully.
Thank you
