Dear Jonathan,
I'm glad you asked!
MDA doesn't 'approve' theasuri as such, but we do publish terminologies which can
be used both for documentation and for more general projects. These are available
through our SPECTRUM Terminology service, which is online at
http://www.mda.org.uk/spectrum-terminology/index.htm.
We do have specific resources relating to the cataloguing of ethnographic collections.
If you look at the terms which was developed by the Pitt Rivers Museum, I think these
will provide a useful starting point.
SPECTRUM Terminology is a growing resource, and we would be very keen to hear
back from you with any suggestions for resources which could/should be included in it.
I would also suggest that you contact Gordon McKenna, our Standards and Systems
Manager ([log in to unmask]). He is responsible for the SPECTRUM Terminology
service and also has considerable experience with the documentation of ethnographic
collections.
Finally, we will be publishing information about the development of this service in our
newsletter (Collections News). If you would like to sign up to receive the free
newsletter, go to http://www.mda.org.uk/subs.htm.
Hope that helps!
Sincerely,
Nick Poole
