ESRC-MRC Postgraduate Studentship
Students in any of the social sciences interested in applying for one of the above studentships
are invited to contact Professor Tony Holland (Health Foundation Chair in Learning Disability)
or Dr Marcus Redley in the Learning Disability Research Group, part of the Department of
Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge. We would like to support a student interested in
developing a PhD project that focuses on: Assisted Eating and Drinking in the Context of
Impaired Mental Capacity.
Assisted eating and drinking, by ‘spoon feeding’ or fitting a feeding tube, occurs where there
are swallowing difficulties and the subsequent risk of choking and/or inhaling food particles.
With respect to people with impaired mental capacity (as a consequence of intellectual
disability, head injury or dementia) we are interested in supporting a student to explore a
range of issues that could include: ‘best interests’ as defined in the Mental Capacity Act
2005, ‘Rights, Independence, Choice and Inclusion’ as set out in the 2002 Department of
Health white paper Valuing People: A New Strategy for Learning Disability for the 21st
Century, professional decision-making within care plans, the practicalities of following eating
and drinking guidelines, the emotional labour of assisting at mealtimes, the medicalisation of
meals, and decreasing the mortality of people with severe swallowing difficulties. These and
other issues could be researched through a combination of quantitative or qualitative
methodologies.
Interested students should contact Tony Holland ([log in to unmask]) or Marcus Redley
([log in to unmask]) on 01223 746123 for further information. All expressions of
interest should be received by the end of the first week of February. It is proposed that the
candidate will be chosen during the following week to allow time to prepare the application to
the ESRC by the 10th March 2006.
