"Global social justice and environmental sustainability"
30 August - 1st September 2006
at the Royal Geographical Society with IBG, London
Second Call for Papers:
Housing in Crisis
A Session Jointly Sponsored by the Social and Cultural Geography,
Political Geography and Urban Geography Research Groups
We are witnessing a revolution in housing, with wholesale
transformations in home ownership and rental tenures, and radical
changes to the structural fabric of our cities and towns. The guiding
forces behind this revolution are political and ideological and pay
only selective attention to the huge chain of societal changes that are
following in its wake.
The purpose of this session is to bring together academics, and others
involved in independent research, who are asking fundamental questions
about what is happening to the residential and community fabric of
cities and towns. This revolution is taking place across Britain, but
also internationally, and this session will provide an opportunity to
compare experiences from different places.
Critical areas of concern include the effects of housing privatisation
and the rise of home ownership, of regeneration policies and
large-scale demolitions, and of the residualisation of public housing;
as well as the relationship between all of these processes and regional
and sectoral inequality and social exclusion. Also of relevance is the
broader political economy and sociology of housing, including flows of
capital through the built environment, urban regulation and policy
processes, and community participation and resistance. Geographers and
others who are concerned with housing have a vital role in analysing
the effects of these changes and drawing them to public attention. We
welcome papers relevant to any of these or related themes.
Paper proposals in the form of a 200 word abstract, using the IBG form
(http://www.rgs.org/pdf/AC2006%20Abstract%20submission%20form.doc), should be
