CALL FOR PAPERS
Nomadic perspectives in art, literature and theatre
4 - 8 September 2006
Odessa State Literary Museum, Odessa, the Ukraine
We are pleased to announce a conference in September 2006 at the Odessa
State Literary
Museum. The subject and title of the conference is "Nomadic
perspectives in arts,
literature and theatre". Metaphorically nomadism can be linked to
phenomenon like the
journey, migration, exile and multiculturalism. Historically it can be seen in
association with Homer and the journey of Ulysses. According to the
tradition the
outermost point of the journey was the ancient Greek colony of Odessos.
The meeting place
for our discussions is Odessa. In a postcolonial perspective the city
represents a
crossroads between centre and periphery, between cultures from the east
and the west, the
south and the north. Its turbulent history has created myths which not
only have
established Odessa's importance as a multicultural centre, but also
myths of the cultural
and artistic exile and migration which have inspired artists both
inside and outside the
Ukraine. We wish to approach examples from theatre, arts and literature
that may
contribute to the understanding of Odessa as a cultural melting pot and
elaborate on
aspects of a nomadic perspective.
Whilst we are currently seeking funding, please bear in mind that no
funds are likely to
be available to cover the cost of the delegates' attendance and travel.
The conference is limited to approx. 25 persons only.
Proposals, including a 200-400 word abstract (for 40 minutes papers),
are to be submitted
by 15 March 2006. The working language will be English.
