Dear All
I would like to report the first 2 weeks of 2006 missing. Does anybody know
of their whereabouts?
Anyway, I was just looking at these emails from Lisa and Paul from last
year. David F, I believe, made some practical suggestions about shared
reading, like "keep it short" and "make sure its available electronically".
Bearing this in mind, when I looked back at Grant's question, "would the
Layard proposals make a rich and practical topic to look at?" (sorry for
just lifting that out of context, Grant) it struck me that they might.
Does anybody have an electronic copy of them?
Is anybody interested in looking at them together?
Are any other "texts" attracting other people's attention?
Wishing you all the best for (what's left of) 2006.
Cheers
Carl

I fully agree with you Lisa,
At the risk of perhaps overloading people with reading suggestions (so what
follows may not necessarily be a good idea - it's something I'm throwing out
for people to consider) - I'm also wondering whether it might be worthwhile
adding some form of "social-realist" writings to the suggested reading list:
so that perhaps we could end up with a more academic / sociological text on
the one hand, and with something that looks closely at the experiences of
disempowered people - (and their relationships with members of the
professional / helping classes, for instance) - on the other.
Some examples that spring to mind:
Nickled and Dimed: working undercover in low wage USA; by Barabara Erenreich
(2003)
Hard Work; by Polly Toynbee (2004)
Dark Heart; by Nick Davies (1998?)
Urban Grimshaw and the Shed Crew; by Bernard Hare (2005)
These are of course merely suggestions and other people may well be able to
come up with more relevant material.
Cheers
Paul

Subject: [COMMUNITYPSYCHUK] Shared reading
Hello all
I really like the idea of us (well, whoever would like to)
reading something and then hearing different people's
responses to it. I think that it would help me become more
involved in the list, in that i would feel more confident
about having something to say.
Hopefully it might also draw out the other 'silent' members
of the list. One reason that I often stay silent is that I
don't quite know who i am communicating with and can easily
feel threatened by the dominant voices. I joined the list
hoping for the opportunity to expand my community psychology
knowledge and thinking, to be challenged and to be inspired -
this is and has been happening. However, I would love to
be coaxed out of my silence and would find the shared
reading a safe place to start!
Best wishes to everyone over the holidays and for the coming
New Year!
Lisa
