As this thread has been briefly resuscitated, I'll mention an Open Source image management system (IMS) which I've been looking at in some detail recently in the search for an IMS for distributed elearning developers in our CETL (www.rlo-cetl.ac.uk). It's called Menalto Gallery (gallery.menalto.com) and is a PHP/MySQL application which can stand alone or be integrated into the Joomla CMS. Although a royal PITA to install and configure on Windows, and requiring a decent knowledge of MySQL and PHP administration and configuration, it is a good product once you get it going and I'll be recommending that we adopt it to use with our instance of Joomla (on a Linux box, I sincerely hope).
Some of the features are listed in a useful comparison of media galleries at http://www.gallery-addons.com/content/view/64/124 and on the Gallery site at http://codex.gallery2.org/index.php/G1-G2_Comparison
Cheers
