The Chinese Section of the Department of the Languages and Cultures of
China and Inner Asia invites applications for a Lectureship in Traditional
Chinese Literature and Culture, commencing 1st September 2006. We are
looking to appoint a specialist in premodern or traditional China who
preferably, but not necessarily, works in one of the following fields:
traditional literature, popular or gentry culture, linguistics of Classical
or Literary Chinese.
The principle responsibilities of the appointee will be to advance
knowledge of traditional Chinese culture and literature by research and
publication, to teach traditional Chinese culture and literature at all
levels, to supervise research students and to carry out administrative
duties. All members of the Chinese Section are expected to make an
appropriate contribution to Chinese language teaching.
Applicants should have experience in teaching classical or literary Chinese
language and traditional culture in a higher-education environment and
native or near-native fluency in modern Mandarin Chinese (putonghua).
Candidates for lectureships should have completed a PhD - or be close to
completion - in a relevant discipline and should have a demonstrable record
of teaching and research in their field.
Annual leave is 30 days per annum plus statutory and Bank Holidays. USS
pension scheme is available.
