The NGOOGD ritual is usually help in a public park. Not only is
it open to the public to take part in, the public is already there
watching with curiosity, bemusement, and probably a little
*only in Berkeley* attitude.

I don't know. I've only ever seen these folks play oss in this May Day
ritual. None of them, so far as I know, are affiliated with Morris dance
troupes or whatever that might travel around to perform hobby oss stuff.
All I know of the hobby oss is in this Neo-Pagan performance arena,
in which it's one episode of several celebrating May Day.
Let me add that I appreciate Sabina's list of differences between the two
events. I'm looking forward to that documentary she mentions.
Towards the end of the short online film there is a shot of what
I take to be a may pole with a big ring on top (about 2:30 into the 3:08
excerpt). If the longer film served as any sort of blueprint for the
Berkeley event--
and it's certain that it did--then I figure that this shot provided support
for the idea of maypole dancing.
