I suspect the Padstow Maypole is a late 20th century
elaboration on the basic ritual, which is
processional. I'll check in Cawte's 'Ritual Animal
Disguise' for older accounts. Ribbon-weaving has been
definitely shown to be a Victorian importation from
France, popular on stage and with schoolteachers! (see
papers by Roy Judge)
