Here at Oxford, we use Bodington VLE (see http://Bodington.org ) and have it
tied into the institutional single sign on; this means regular login is
(effectively) tied to the student records system.
In addition we create guest user accounts for research collaborators within
Bodington. You could do this for your not-yet-arrived students. When they
arrive, a sys admin could change their 'guest username' to be their official
university username.
This means (technically speaking) we have two authentications stores, one
official store, and one internal store within the VLE.
There is another way in which Bodington can help. V2.8 due out at the end of
march will be a Shibboleth Service Provider.
In a nutshell, this means that Bodington can be configured so that if a user
has a Shibboleth Identity Provider (IdP) (ie, a system somewhere on the web
where they can login to a system which is an IdP), then they can access the
VLE without further ado. The VLE will do auto-account creation and will then
grant access to resources. It is also possible to restrict what a visitor
such as this can see, for example, you could have an area especially for
prospective students; the could be given access to some courses (a taster)
but could be prevented from seeing 'sensitive material'!
This shibboleth option may be one for the future, but already some
institutions are committed to implementing a Shibboleth IdP, Leeds Uni for
example (another Bodington user).
If you want more info then please do ask.

| Subject: [VLES] VLEs and international students
|
| Hi folks,
| I'm looking for some examples of successful VLE use with international
| students, which I can pass on to one of our region's colleges (Harper
| Adams University College).
|
| They are particularly interested in examples where students can log on to
| the VLE before moving to the UK, as part of their preparation for study.
|
| Any examples would be much appreciated!
|
| Many thanks,
|
