Participants requested for new Research on Domestic Violence and Disability
A new, national research project exploring issues around disability and
domestic abuse is being presently being undertaken under the management of Women's
Aid, and sponsorship of the Big Lottery Fund. The focus is directed upon
exploring disabled women's experiences of domestic abuse and assessments of
existing, service provision for disabled women experiencing abuse. A major aim is
to understand and improve service provision for this user group by local and
national domestic violence and disability organisations, by disseminating
findings and applying these to awareness raising and training within relevant arenas.
The study is being conducted by disabled and non-disabled researchers from
the Universities of Bristol and Warwick, and will be advised by disabled women
as service users, disability organisations, and by Women's Aid as service
providers.
Research design involves surveys of services available in both domestic
violence and disabled people's organisations, case studies of organisations, and
qualitative interviews with disabled abused women, taking on issues of diversity
and equality.
Focus Group
To explore issues of domestic violence and disability initially, we are
looking to organise a focus group consisting of disabled women taking place in
Manchester at 1-3pm on Monday, 23rd January 2006. This will involve a group
discussion about key issues surrounding disability and domestic violence, where
disabled, female survivors of domestic violence are regarded as key experts in
this issue. In this instance, we are exploring the experiences of disabled women
with physical and sensory impairment experiencing abuse, and service
provision for this group.
If you are interested in taking part, please contact members of the research
team, who will equip you with further information about what participation
involves.
