Applications are invited for a Medical Research Council (MRC)-funded 3 year Bioinformatics Research Studentship at the University of Glasgow in "Ubiquitous Computing in the Molecular Biology Laboratory". This post, available immediately and jointly supervised by staff in the Division of Molecular Genetics, IBLS and the Dept. of Computing Science, will involve an investigation of the application of ubiquitous computing technologies to Molecular Biology laboratory activities. In particular, the aim of the work is to address opportunities for using a combination of context sensing (e.g. location tracking, rfid object identification) AND multimodal input/output as a means of reducing a lab worker's workload and improving their performance. It is expected that developing a flexible solution for the integration of these technologies with existing lab infrastructure, both physical and computational, will form a key challenge of this work, as will the provision of tools to help the lab worker configure the system for their particular needs. The successful candidate should possess a substantial background in both Biology and Computing Science. In the latter case, knowledge of user interface engineering, ubiquitous computing, mobile systems and software engineering are highly desirable, as is knowledge and/or experience of observational and empirical studies of human-computer interaction. Hands-on experience of the laboratory environment and of the methods used in molecular biology would also be an advantage.
The student will work as a member of the Interactive Systems Group in the Computing Science Department (http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/research/gist/) and as an active member of the PhD student community in IBLS.
