APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTING

Please find below brief details of forthcoming TFPL training courses and events. For more details please contact Angela Cookson.

strategic information architecture design: building the platform for corporate delivery
*Also available as an in-house course
This one day senior level masterclass introduces information and knowledge managers to the principles of information architecture design and their impact on corporate strategy. Information resources are increasingly critical corporate assets but most organisations fail to capitalise on their value because the resources are badly organised and relatively inaccessible. Now more than ever, it is vital that all corporate information resources are connected into a coherent framework for management, navigation and access. Information and knowledge managers need to drive this convergence and this workshop gives them the tools.
Speaker: Adrian Dale
Date: 24th May 06
Course fee: £495 + VAT (£581.63) includes buffet lunch and refreshments.

This is vocabulary construction for the 21st century. The two day course will help you work out whether and how to build a thesaurus, how to adapt it for specific needs and how to plan the work that will be involved. Practical exercises reinforce the principles and there will be opportunities to raise and discuss the practicalities of your own situation. The principles apply equally to taxonomies and a thorough understanding will help you build for the electronic age.
Speaker: Stella Dextre-Clarke

folksonomies: using tagging and folksonomies to support knowledge sharing in organisations - NEW
*Also available as an in-house course
Folksonomies are a powerful, simple and fun way to allow communities of people to identify and index the information resources that are useful to them. 'Tagging' allows individuals to attach keywords of their choice to links to information resources that they wish to be able to find again. Folksonomies are ways of harnessing the potential knowledge sharing advantages of tags by allowing a community of users to access and use each others 'tags', and to search on each others keywords. Folksonomies were pioneered on the world wide web by websites such as del.ici.ous.com. They are potentially even more powerful inside organisations, when users can benefit from colleagues recommendations on useful resources.
speaker: James Lappin
course fee: £295.00 + VAT (£346.63) includes buffet lunch and refreshments.

introducing metadata (Glasgow)
Metadata is the information about an information resource that enables others to find it, to interpret it and to manage it. Metadata is fundamentally a simple concept: it consists of a metadata field and a value entered into that field. Managing metadata is the art of establishing which fields you need, and of ensuring the quality and consistency of values entered into those fields.

planning and building a taxonomy
If a taxonomy is to be effective as a tool for navigating information resources, it must be integrated with the other desktop tools and interfaces, and it must reflect user needs. This two day workshop looks at the whole environment in which the taxonomy operates, including the browse/search interface for end-users, and the procedures for indexing resources or categorising them automatically. The course covers key issues of structure, presentation and ways of satisfying diverse user needs, and looks behind the scenes at how technological "solutions" work. The exercises on day two will provide practical experience of assembling terms and concepts into a user-friendly shape. Participants may bring up their own challenges for group discussion.
