Hi Ruth
We have had a portal and CMS in place for a number of years now. In 2001 we
decided to move forward with parallel portal/CMS projects and in both cases
opted for open-source solutions. Our portal for staff and students has
always used uPortal from JA-SIG. This has gone through a number of versions
and we recently upgraded to 2.5.
Our approach to CMS has changed over time. Originally we had a homegrown
system but decided to evaluate other options when it became clear this was
not viable in the longer term. We eventually chose another open source
solution HyperContent. For any CMS evaluation I would still recommend using
the Browning and Lowndes paper for the JISC from sometime ago. Core
requirements of a CMS have not changed that much, particularly in relation
to the production of web sites.
Yes, we are happy with both, the upgrade to our version of uPortal has
significantly improved performance and enhanced flexibility. The CMS gives
us all the key features we need for managing Web sites and recent versions
have also seen improvements for the user, making the editing of pages very
straightforward.
Cheers
Robert
