UK GOVERNMENT ITS 'VISIONS' COMPETITION
RULES
On the occasion of the 13TH World Congress and Exhibition on Intelligent Transport Systems and Services, being held at ExCel London from 8 to 12 October 2006, the Department for Transport is organising an "ITS 'Visions' Competition for academic students.
The Competition
The competition test is to create a computer-based representation showing how ITS techniques and services might contribute positively to daily life for all classes of travellers in 2015.
Presentations can be built up using cartoons, animations, PowerPoint shows, videos, simulations sound, etc in any combination. Videos must use either Windows Media Player or QuickTime software and run for no more than 10 minutes.
The winning entries will be displayed at the ITS World Congress in London in October 2006.
Eligibility
The competition is open to any post-graduate student who wishes to submit an entry on behalf of their University. University is taken to mean any academic institution or similar body granting post-graduate degrees. There is no limit on how many entries any one University may make.
Entry Process
The closing date for receipt of entries by the Department for Transport is 17:00 on 1 July 2006.
Entries must be submitted on non-rewritable CDs. Five copies of each entry should be sent to Cathy Jenkins, DfT ITS World Congress 2006 Co-ordinator, Zone 2/03, Great Minster House, Department for Transport, 76 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 4DR. Proof of postage will not be taken as proof of delivery.
All entries will retain Intellectual Property Rights but by entering the competition agree to allow the Department for Transport unrestricted permission to show an entry in full or in part in support of Departmental policies.
Judging
The competition entries will be judged by an International Panel of ITS and transport experts chaired by Professor Eric Sampson, Head of Transport and Technology Division, Department for Transport.

The judging criteria are:
Originality of how ITS might support daily life for travellers in 2015
Innovation in how to present the benefits to travellers
Practicality of implementation
Quality and clarity of presentation
The judges' decision will be final.
Results
Prize winners will be notified in writing by 1 September 2006. Prizes will be announced and awards given to the prize winning institutions during the ITS World Congress in London 2006.
Prizes
Prizes will be awarded to the academic institution as set out below.
The academic institutions from which the 3 top entries come will receive a cash prize and free admission for two students to the London 2006 Congress where they can enjoy public display of their winning entries. TRL (the UK Transport Research Laboratory) is sponsoring these prizes.
In addition, the academic institution of each prize winner will be reimbursed for the equivalent of a complimentary air fare for travel to the Beijing World Congress in 2007 on condition that, on behalf of their organisation, the winner produces a detailed Congress report for the UK Government on the emerging ITS applications and trends by the end of December 2007.
First prize
£3000
2 free delegate passes to the London Congress
up to £2000 as the equivalent of 2 air fares for travel to the Beijing Congress, to be reimbursed to the academic institution on receipt of an accepted Congress report.
Second prize
£2000
2 free delegate passes to the London Congress
up to £1000 as the equivalent of 1 air fare for travel to the Beijing Congress, to be reimbursed to the academic institution on receipt of an accepted Congress report.
Third prize
£1000
2 free admissions to the London Congress
up to £1000 as the equivalent of 1 air fare for travel to the Beijing Congress, to be reimbursed to the academic institution on receipt of an accepted Congress report.
