Traveller Behavioural Responses to Environmental Information
Ph.D. Studentship
Transportation Research Group,
School of Civil Engineering and the Environment
University of Southampton
Completed applications should be returned no later than 15 July 2006.
Ref no: 05R0980
While individual travellers are becoming increasingly aware of the
environmental implications of their travel decisions (in relation to both
global warming and health impacts), the awareness remains at a general
level rather than being related to specific journey decisions. Although a
large body of research exists on how travellers respond to congestion and
travel time information, far less is currently known about possible
equivalent behavioural responses to environmental and air pollution
information.
As part of a major research project, a three year Ph.D. research
studentship starting in October 2006 is available to investigate how
increasing the availability of timely and accurate environmental
information relevant to specific journeys and locations could enable
travellers to make more informed sustainable choices.
The £3.5m Pervasive Mobile Environmental Sensor Grids (PMESG) project, is
jointly funded by the EPSRC and the Department for Transport, and comprises
a consortium of partners from Imperial College (lead partner) and the
Universities of Cambridge, Southampton, Newcastle and Leeds, working
closely with a number of major industrial partners and transport
authorities. More information on the project is available at
http://www.pmesg.org.uk
The studentship includes a maintenance grant of £12,300 per annum and full
tuition fees for three years. Applicants should have at least a 1st or 2.1
class undergraduate degree and preferably also a masters degree (or
equivalent experience) in transport, engineering, environment or a related
discipline. UK, EU and international students with appropriate
qualifications are all encouraged to apply.
For consideration for this studentship, candidates should send a full CV
including the names of two referees (at least one of whom should be an
academic tutor) to Jacqui Holmes, PGR Programmes Coordinator, School of
Civil Engineering and the Environment, University of Southampton,
Highfield, Southampton, SO17 1BJ; Tel: +44 (0)23 8059 2668; Fax: +44 (0)23
