Institute of Railway Studies & Transport History
National Railway Museum/University of York, UK
PhD studentship, Gateways to Europe: travelling by rail and sea between The
Netherlands and Great Britain 1900-1975
Applications are invited for a three-year studentship in the Institute of
Railway Studies & Transport History (National Railway Museum/University of
York, UK) to undertake doctoral research into how railways and ports have
shaped the experience of travel by land and sea between The Netherlands and
Great Britain in the 20th century. As well as leading to a doctoral thesis,
the research will form the basis of a joint exhibition at the National
Railway Museum, York and the Dutch Railway Museum, Utrecht. The studentship
is generously funded by NedRailways and is expected to be available from
January 2007.
The studentship: The studentship is for full-time study and covers all
University fees (EU students only) and approved travel and subsistence in
connection with the research for the first three years. A maintenance grant
comparable to that offered by the AHRC is also offered for the same period.
The student will be registered with the University of York and supervised
by Dr Barbara Schmucki (Institute of Railway Studies & Transport History).
The student will also have the benefit of advice from colleagues in the
University’s Department of History and in the National Railway Museum.
Research students in the University are required to follow a
structured programme of training in appropriate research methodologies and
techniques, and are expected to submit their thesis within three years of
initial registration.
Person specification: You must have at least an upper second class honours
degree (or equivalent) in history or another relevant discipline and be
able to demonstrate the potential to work at doctoral level in modern
European history. Knowledge of written Dutch would be an advantage.
Please note that although we are happy to consider applications
from people domiciled outside the European Union, the studentship does not
cover the additional University fees payable by such students.
Further information and applications: Further information may be obtained
from Dr Barbara Schmucki ([log in to unmask], +44 (0)1904 686751) who will
also be pleased to discuss the project informally.
Applications must be made by sending a short CV (maximum 1 side of A4) with
a brief letter of application (maximum 2 sides of A4) detailing your
interest in the project to:
