the images you sent do not really allow to judge normalization quality
as you compare them with the brain contour only. You should overlay them
on the template you used for normalization, which may be a bit larger
then the standard one (I have seen this too). Also, smoothing will lead
to a certain smearing of data which will also lead to very low t-values
being found outside the gray matter contour. As long as it is not way
out, you may still be fine.
