Rui,
First, I realise that the way you quote people's emails is entirely
wrong. Like
you did the last time - in an email, somebody says 'have a look at this and
that chapter of the SLOS to learn more about spatial analysis'; you
quote this,
and ask whether the book is taught as a book on spatial analysis - an
impossible
conclusion to reach when you consider the entire email you quote from. This is
academically wrong - you cannot totally ignore the entire text - the intention
of the person who writes, and the question he/she tries to answer - and just
quote a sentence that serves your own purposes. You did this many times
before.
You seem to be motivated by some self-interests (about which I have no idea),
but as you are a person who talks about doing research properly, first you
should quote people in a proper way. If you don't do that, you can only be a
bad example for the next generation of researchers you mention.
Coming to your new question: I heard about the wikipedia only a few
months ago,
and it was through the mailbase, and I never used it for academic purposes. I
myself have never used the mailbase to ask for any single reference, and I
haven't come across with the names of the students I know doing this in the
mails sent to this mailbase. But even if students do this, what is wrong with
it? In the end, don't we have this mailbase to share information and
knowledge,
and to help new people from around the world who are interested in SS? (by the
way, I am sure most of the students who ask about literature are those who are
away from the places where SS is taught, especially from countries where
library and online research systems are not much developed - you cannot
imagine
what kind of a luxury you have there in London, believe me). And even if
students use the mailbase to ask for references, would this mean that
they ONLY
use the mailbase and not other sources, and that they do not go to the
libraries? If this is the conclusion you reach, I would not be
surprised, cause
this is exactly the kind of logic you follow when you quote.
And by the way, aren't you at UCL? Why don't you go and talk to the students
there if you feel there is a problem in the way they do research? Why
don't you
go and talk to the people who teach there, instead of complaining about what
they do in the mailbase? Maybe then you would really be beneficial. But
is this
your purpose? - AND PLEASE IGNORE THIS QUESTION.
Best,
Didem Kilickiran.
