Subject: DCC'06 workshop on MODELS OF MACHINE LEARNING IN CREATIVE
DESIGN, call for papers
Dear Author,
We are currently inviting position and research paper submissions for
the DCC’06 workshop on Models of Machine Learning in Creative Design, to
be held Saturday, 8 July, 2006 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
/Workshop aim/: Analytical activities such as pattern recognition, etc.,
etc., are the standard domain of machine learning, yet these are crucial
to the process of design. If machine creativity is to be considered,
learning must play a central role. If human designers learn to design
from our experience in the world and with prior designed artifacts, how
is it possible for the machine to do the same? This workshop will
investigate the theoretical and technical aspects of learning models in
design contexts to one of two possible practical ends:
1. The machine is able to interpret precedents, situations and make
design decisions comparable to those of a human designer. This directly
addresses the nature of creativity.
2. The machine can aid designers by augmenting the process, in learning
what we cannot. Scale and volume of attributes characterize the typical
situations necessitating a machine learning approach. This highlights
differences in content, but requires a broader understanding of what
learning in general might be.
/The workshop will feature addresses from two key speakers/:
Professor Igor Aleksander, Imperial College
Professor Hermann Haken, Universität Stuttgart
More information can be found on the workshop website:

deadline for drafts is 15 May.
