Dear Abby,
I think it's great you've managed to do that. Thank you. The World
Congress of Sociology in July demonstrated to me again how unaware other
sociologists are of the work going on within the Sociology of Religion.

> Hi everyone

> At our Manchester Socrel Postgrad meeting last April, many of you

> Religion and Society. We will only have time for about 12 papers - I
> really encourage you to consider submitting an abstract. Please see

> Dear all
>
> In an exciting new initiative, our Sociology of Religion study group of
> the BSA will be hosting a ‘Religion and Society’ stream at the annual
> British Sociological Association conference, April 12-14 2007. This is
> an important event to represent religion in the sociology mainstream and
> engage with social scientists from across the discipline. (This is in
> addition to the annual study group conference, 2-4 April, 2007 in
> Oxford.)
>
> Prof. Linda Woodhead, Socrel Chair, and Dr Abby Day, Socrel Postgraduate
> Liaison Officer, will be organising and chairing the stream. We
> anticipate being able to have 12 papers during a dedicated morning
> session on April 13. If you are interested in presenting a paper, please
> send an abstract by September 30 2006 to:
>
> Linda Woodhead: [log in to unmask] and
> Abby Day: [log in to unmask]

> BSA Annual Conference 2007
> Social Connections: Identities, Technologies, Relationships
>
> Thursday 12th - Saturday 14th April 2007,
> University of East London
>
> Key note speakers:
> Bruno Latour (Ecole des Mines, Paris)
> Saskia Sassen (Chicago)
> Anthony Giddens (LSE)

> Conference theme
> The overarching theme invites engagement with a wide range of contemporary
> sociological concerns. The title 'social connections' frames a series of
> debates around identities, technologies and relationships, which also
> encompass the diversity of research interests within the discipline. A key
> element of the conference will be to explore how technologies are an
> integral part of the sociological imagination. Technological
> transformation is a rich theme in contemporary social theory and research,
> and in people's everyday lives. However, by using the term technology, we
> point beyond the material to include social action and ways of doing
> things. In this context, we wish to encourage contributions which explore
> innovations in social life, and how we as sociologists think about them,
> drawing on technologies which are social, political, economic, emotional,
> cultural as well as material. The Conference theme provides opportunities
> for reflection on innovations in the practice of
> sociology and the transformations of the discipline. We invite
> specialised sessions
>
>
> PERSONS WHO ARE GIVING A PRESENTATION
> - Must register for the conference by 12th January 2007. The conference
> organisers reserve the right to exclude presenters who have not
> registered by this time from the programme.
> - Note it is very important that you turn up to deliver your paper!
> Delegates will expect you to be there, and as a courtesy to them and to
> other paper givers please ensure that you are present in the relevant
> room. Forty-three paper authors withdrew their, accepted paper,
> presentation prior to the 2005 conference and Sixty paper authors
> withdrew prior to the 2004 conference. If you know in advance that
> circumstances will prevent you being at the conference, please try to
> arrange for someone else to deliver the paper on your behalf. In any
> event, please let the office know as soon as possible if you are unable
> to deliver your paper in person. You should be aware that the BSA
> Executive Committee made a policy decision several years ago stating
> that if people fail to turn up or drop out at the last minute 'without
> good cause’; they will be debarred from giving a paper at future BSA
> events for two years.
> - Will be required to chair a session (not first time presenters).
> - May be contacted by the BSA Media Consultant to talk to the
> Press/Media about their work.
