The Center for Comparative and International Studies (CIS) at the Swiss
Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (ETH) seeks a
PhD Candidate (60%)
interested in writing his/her PhD thesis on conflict research.
The International Conflict Research group (http://www.icr.ethz.ch)
conducts research on international and domestic conflict based on
social-science approaches and complexity theory.
Research area:
Our current work applies agent-based modeling to the study of civil wars
and ethnic conflict. Together with international collaborators, we are
in the process of extending this research empirically to the use of
spatial statistics and geographic information systems.
Your background:
We are looking for candidates who can conduct research on international
conflict using simulation methods. Both natural and social scientists
possessing a master’s degree in their main field of study are welcome to
apply. Ideally, applicants should have a strong background in computer
science, and at least a willingness to specialize in the social
sciences. English proficiency is required. Pedagogical experience is
also welcome as some teaching assistance belongs to the duties of
this position.
What we offer:
We offer the successful candidate an intellectually challenging position
in an international context leading to a PhD at ETH or the University of
Zurich. Applicants with little experience of political science are
required to enroll in the Master of Comparative and International
Studies (MACIS) at CIS.
Your application:
Interested students are invited to submit a brief pre-proposal (maximum
five pages), application letter and CV, letters of recommendation, and
other application materials to ETH Zürich, André Schmid, Leiter
Personalberatung; Ref. PHD-ICR, Turnerstr. 1, CH-8092 Zürich.
