Subject: [PSCI-COM] ABSW briefing Monday night
Just to remind you all:
Next Monday 20th November, we are holding the ABSW briefing on
interviewing skills for journalists. As if Quentin Cooper from R4 wasn't
enough, we are now fortunate in having Rowan Hooper from New Scientist
to represent print journalism and Malcolm Love, BBC Radio 4 producer and
media trainer to chair and lead the evening..and kind hospitality
provided by the Wellcome Trust.
best
Becky
Here are the details again:
ABSW briefing
The next meeting will discuss:
How to get the most out of interviewing
Monday 20th November 2006
Welcome drinks: 6.30pm
Talk: 7.00-8.00 pm.
Aimed at science communicators, writers, broadcasters and students this
year's briefings aim to provide an introduction or refresher to some of
the basic skills that underpin the daily activities of a writer and
broadcaster to help you develop your career.
This month, presenter of Radio 4's Material World, Quentin Cooper will
give us his tips on how to conduct a successful interview and share some
of his interviewing experiences with us. Described by The Times as "the
world's most enthusiastic man" and, more flatteringly, as "an expert on
everything from pop music to astrophysics", Quentin Cooper has also been
acclaimed by the Daily Mail for his "wit and enthusiasm which can
enliven the dullest of topics" The session will look at interviewing for
broadcast and writing an
article:
* The basics: the research, setting up, briefing the interviewee
beforehand,
navigating the challenges of the interview itself, how much material to
gather, recording, writing up, and extracting the essential answers so
that you can write your piece.
* How do you get someone to 'open up' and provide the answers that
you want
to hear rather than letting them take you on a diversion?
* How do you fairly deal with someone whose views are anathema to
you?
* How do you handle a difficult interviewee e.g. the non-stop
rambler, the
nervous interviewee, the control freak?
* How do you broach sensitive topics?
* How do you deal with children and other unsophisticated sources?
* How do you protect confidential sources (people whom you have
promised to
protect) while using their information to conduct further research?"
