The Science Museum's Dana Centre, opened in November 2003, is a purpose build venue for adults, dedicated to hosting innovative debates about controversial, contemporary science issues and their impact on society in a relaxed café-bar environment. The Centre provides a test-bed for science engagement; by trialling and evaluating new event formats, technologies and content, we strive to deliver a powerful and engaging programme that exceeds audience's expectations and experience. We currently have a vacancy for an Event Coordinator (Sex series)
JOB TITLE: Event Coordinator (Sex series)
SALARY: £22,970 per annum pro-rata
LOCATION: South Kensington
REPORTS TO: Kat Nilsson
CONTRACT: 4 months
CLOSING DATE: 28th November 2006
We are looking for someone with demonstrable experience in event coordination and project management who has a keen interest in contemporary science issues and who enjoys using their initiative. They will be required to develop and deliver 3 innovative science engagement events. They must be organised and efficient with the ability to effectively influence other teams. Delivery of the project involves working closely with Marketing, Press, Evaluation, Collections and the Broadcast Media and Web team. The Event Coordinator will book scientists and comedians and will develop new dialogue event formats, including piloting new communication methods, that can be used again. They will need creative writing skills and imagination to develop the comedy panel event and to create marketing materials. The position also requires good record keeping and written skills to submit detailed reports to funders and the ability to manage and report a £20,000 budget. The post holder will also have good problem-solving skills.
FURTHER INFORMATION:
The project will:
* Increase awareness and understanding of research and current understanding about sex, sexuality and gender, including Masters and Johnson's work on the human sexual response
* Stimulate debate and explore audience views on the ethical, moral, social and economic implications of developments in sexology
* Pilot and evaluate innovative new SMS technology to support dialogue
* Develop creative and effective dialogue event formats
* Build new audiences through globally accessible Webcasting and targeted marketing
* Increase scientists', policy-makers' and other key stakeholders' awareness and understanding of the public's opinions about sexology through participation in the events, follow up dissemination and the Dana Centre's online discussion area
* Engage audiences with relevant objects from of the Science Museum's medical collections and enable them to access and interpret these.
