Genetics, Risk and Publics: what are the issues?
A Nowgen-CESAGen seminar for researchers, practitioners and stakeholders
28 September 2006
9.30am - 4.30pm
The Nowgen Centre,
29 Grafton Street,
Manchester, M13 9WU
Many issues involving risk have been identified and begun to be addressed under the diverse and dynamic fronts encompassed by 'the new genetics'. But how are these risks to be evaluated alongside other ethical, social, economic, political and practical factors? And how are differences between diverse public and expert attitudes and framings of the issues to be handled?
Public attitudes are often assumed to be attitudes to those same ('risk') objects as expert risk assessment has defined. What if people are bringing other meanings to bear too? How might we understand and respond to these? What responsibilities might we have for identifying the proper focal points of their concerns?
The seminar will hear papers from experts in this field and share reflections on developing ways of understanding this domain where research and practical issues have to be constructively worked together, with public health in mind.
Speakers:
Brian Wynne - Governance as Risk Control: filling out the public agenda
