The Wellcome Library holds the second title mentioned by Michael
(Science and the nation, 1947) and probably more on the subject. You
can search the catalogue at http://library.wellcome.ac.uk/. The Library
is open to all.

While the MRC and Royal Society are interesting precedents, the real
kick off for public science came in the Second World War.
Two books worth pursuing, if you can find them, are: "Science at War"
published in 1947 by the DSIR/HMSO (see earlier messages) at 2 shillings
and six pence; and Science and The Nation, also published in 1947 by
Penguin at
1 shilling.
Both are very interesting and offer some good insights into the growth
of public science.

Thanks to everyone for info and websites - all really useful - I am
looking for info from fairly far back in terms of the rationale for
starting to fund science publicly.
- most of the sites mentioned have something on that - either from the
public health perspective or technology/innovation side of things
Thanks again - any more ideas welcome!

The MRC was set up in 1913 to work on TB. As Barbara says, it was
originally called the Medical Research Committee. It changed its name
in 1920.

The National Insurance Act of 1911 apportioned insurance revenues for
the purposes of medical research. From this came the Medical Research
Committee, forerunner of the Medical Research Council.
This from an article in RDS News by Dr Tilli Tansey of the Wellcome
Trust Institute for the History of Medicine, published July 1993. Most
of the article is about the development of the distemper vaccine in the
1920s and the battle between MRC and antivivisection groups over the use
of dogs in this research.
