The Enigma Schools Project is a highly successful educational outreach
initiative that uses the ‘Secret World of Codes and Code Breaking’ to engage
children with mathematics.
Part of the award-winning Millennium Mathematics Project and based at the
University of Cambridge, the Enigma Project takes a genuine WW2 Enigma
cipher machine to schools, masterclasses, conferences and festivals to
deliver hands-on code breaking talks and workshops.
In the past academic year, the Enigma Project reached over 12,000 children,
teachers and adults at venues all over Britain and Ireland.
The current Enigma Project Schools Officer is planning to leave the project
within the next few months, and it’s therefore likely that a position within
the Enigma Project will be advertised in the near future for someone with a
public communication of maths/science background, excellent speaking and
presentation skills, and a very strong interest in maths education.
If you are already working, or would like to work, in the area of public
communication of mathematics, and would like to find out more about how the
Enigma Project operates, then please contact Claire Ellis, Enigma Schools
Project Officer, on 01223 764604 or email at [log in to unmask] for
an informal chat. Please note that the details of the possible new post
(including salary) are not yet confirmed, and that this doesn’t form part of
any recruitment process – we are only offering a chance to find out more
about the project itself and to express interest in receiving more details
when available. Once a replacement post has been confirmed the job would be
advertised widely (probably in early September), and full information will
be posted on the MMP website when available.
