Dear Colleagues
The first ever Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Open Meeting
will be held at the Royal Society of Arts, London, on Tuesday 18 July 2006.
The ESRC funds research into the big social and economic issues facing us
today, and also trains and develops the UK¡¦s future social scientists. Our
research informs public policy and helps to make businesses, voluntary
bodies and other organisations more effective. Researchers funded by ESRC
study a huge diversity of topical subjects, ranging from climate change, to
improved emergency services, to the implications of GM food, and a lot more
in between. Our research has tangible impacts, a recent example being its
contribution to the successful Olympic 2012 bid.
The ESRC is keen to obtain the views of the public, and of its stakeholders,
on a range of topics including:
„X What are the key research questions both within and beyond the
ESRC¡¦s current research challenges that we should be addressing over the
next five years?
„X How can business improve its links with, and use of, social
scientists, and with social science research?
„X How can ESRC more effectively communicate and engage with
the wider public?
„X How can we increase, and evaluate, the impact of social science
research on policy and practice?
The meeting will be facilitated by Mike Baker, BBC Education Correspondent.
The meeting is open to the general public, and individuals from all sectors are
encouraged to attend and present their views.
