News Editor - Materials World and The Packaging Professional
Working under the supervision of and reporting to the Editor of
Materials World and The Packaging Professional - the News Editor will
fulfil a key role in the editorial team by producing news, coordinating
the publication's websites and being responsible for the Materials World
input into My Materials World, the Institute's electronic news service
as well as co-ordinating the work of the Reporter and Editorial
Assistant. Representing the magazines at events and helping to raise
their profile will also be an important part of the New Editor's
activities.
Skills and attributes
* A degree in a physical science, preferably a materials science,
is essential
* Previously demonstrated ability to write incisive,
well-structured news within a magazine or communications environment
* Confident face-to-face and telephone interview manner
* Sourcing and chasing images
* Attention to detail, Strong proofreading and sub-editing skills
* Good IT skills. Experience of QuarkXPress and Macs is essential
* Good organisational and interpersonal skills
* Self-starter, enthusiastic and able to work on own initiative
* Ability to work to tight deadlines, and with accuracy under
pressure
* Flexible approach to working
Main duties
* To write, edit and layout the news sections of the magazines
* To represent the magazine at press events, exhibitions and
conferences, as well as attending in a news gathering capacity, carrying
out interviews when appropriate
* To liaise with contributors, chase copy and proactively search
for news stories.
* To assist in general production tasks, including picture
research and cover for team members when necessary
* To develop contacts within and outside the Institute to raise
the profile of the magazines.
* To assist with any other projects undertaken by the editorial
team.
* To carry out additional research, liaison with internal staff
and direct contact with contributors.
Commissioning Editor - IOM3 magazines
Working under the supervision of and reporting to the Editor of
Materials World, The Packaging Professional and Clay Technology - the
Commissioning Editor will fulfil a key role in the editorial team by
producing features. Representing the magazines at events and helping to
raise their profile will also be an important part of the Commissioning
Editor's activities.
Skills and attributes
* Strong editorial skills and the ability to sense a good story
* Experience of writing features and also commissioning is
desirable
* Science/engineering experience preferable but confidence with
scientific material essential
* Ability to cultivate contacts and establish links with
contributors/organisations
* Sourcing and chasing images
* Attention to detail, Strong proofreading and sub-editing skills
* Good IT skills. Experience of QuarkXPress and Macs is essential
* Good organisational and interpersonal skills
* Self-starter, enthusiastic and able to work on own initiative
* Ability to work to tight deadlines, and with accuracy under
pressure
