Phase IV
Tue 16 May @ 8.45
Director: Saul Bass | USA 1973 | 1h24m | 35mm | PG
Cast: Nigel Davenport, Michael Murphy, Lynne Frederick, Alan Gifford.
In this eerie slice of science fiction, mankind's individualistic nature comes under threat from an evolving species of super- intelligent, super-resistant ant. The film marked the directorial debut of noted title designer Saul Bass (Vertigo, Psycho, The Man With The Golden Arm, etc), and has all the hallmarks of his distinct visual style. Also notable is the amazing cinematography and the articulation of a species alien to mankind, tiny in size, but infinitely superior in numbers, with a collective self-sacrificing sociological behaviour, its own language and an advanced knowledge of geometry.
There will be a post-film discussion with the audience, exploring issues raised by the film, including collective intelligence, man's relationship with nature and the significance of the film for a modern audience. The discussion will be chaired by writer Andrew J Wilson with Calum MacKellar (curator of the Bioethics Film Festival), Graham Rotheray (curator of Insects at the National Museum of Scotland) and James McKenzie (Filmhouse)
