Hello
1) A new report on adapting Democs for use in schools, and discussion
based learning techniques will be available soon on the nef website at
http://www.neweconomics.org/gen/democs.aspx
Just like a bed of roses. Democs and discussion based learning in the
classroom
is designed to be a practical guide for teachers and science
communicators on using Democs with young people, as well as being an
evaluation report. It highlights that Democs adapted for schools will be
useful in delivering the new Science GCSE that comes into effect in
September 2006.
The report includes plenty of comments from teachers, case studies, and
frequently asked questions.
Check in the Publications links on the right hand side of the page for
the pdf download. The report is available as a pdf only.
The report will also be available on the Sciencewise website
www.sciencewise.org.uk
2) Viewing and uploading votes online
The results of the Democs kits adapted for schools can now be input
online, and the results of games played so far, by topic, can also be
viewed online. Use the link above and then go to View and upload
results. Results are available for:
Stem cell research
Climate change
Vaccinations policy
Animal experimentation
Neuroscience
GM food
Reminder: kits on the topics above are all free to download on the
democs downloads page (on the downloads page, webpage as above).
3) Equalities Democs.
A new Democs on Equalities will shortly be available to download for
free on the nef website. The format of the kit is identical to schools
kits, and may be useful in Citizenship studies. Please note, as policy
positions are not given in this kit, it is not really a 'Democs'.
Democs kits aim to:
A) give information on a topic
B) create space for players to decide what they think on a topic
C) have voting to link into policy and decision making.
The equalities kit has been designed as a training tool - so meeting
Aims A and B above. It was developed with the Community Development
Foundation for this purpose. It can be used in local or organsational
policy making, and how to do so is explained in the kit instructions. So
it can also fulfil Aim C.
