James Piercy, Inspire science centre, Norwich, professional science
performer
Dr Simon Gage, Director of Edinburgh Science Festival
This 2 day course is for those who have an enthusiasm for science
communication, some raw talent, but may not have had much practical
experience. It will suit those that are interested in working with
children, family groups and adults in a range of situations from the
class room to the theatre stage. It is about learning the practical
skills needed to stand up and communicate face to face.
You will be taught by some of the best and most experienced science
communicators in the UK.
The emphasis is on learning through doing. The course will revolve
around practical workshops, tutored by people with considerable
experience, in which you will work on short presentation pieces which we
will help you modify and improve. There will be improvisation games and
some presentations.
The culmination of this event is an opportunity to appear before a live
audience at the Traverse Theatre on Saturday 13 May and put what you
have learned into practice.
The course will cover:
• understanding and interacting with your audience
• setting reasonable objectives for what you want to communicate
• presentation styles
• communication skills
• stage craft and using props
