Media and Trust Fundraising Officer
Background
The People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) was founded in 1977 to
help ensure a future for many endangered species worldwide. It funds and
commissions conservation research and runs an educational, public events
programme to promote conservation and to raise support for its work.
Mammals Trust UK is a restricted fund of the PTES which has similar
objectives focused on mammals in the UK. See www.ptes.org and

The Trust is seeking a Media and Trust Fundraising Officer to promote its
varied conservation work to the general public and ultimately to raise
funds for future work to conserve endangered species. The Media and Trust
Fundraising Officer will promote the Trust’s work to a range of national
and regional print, broadcast and online outlets. S/he will liaise closely
with staff involved in the outreach programme of promotional work at summer
fairs and county shows and be expected to attend these and some other
events. The Media and Trust Fundraising Officer will coordinate, prepare
and submit applications for funding for aspects of the Trust’s work to
charitable trusts and foundations and, on occasion, other grant giving
bodies.
The postholder will be a science graduate preferably in conservation,
environmental science or a related discipline and be able to demonstrate
strong communication skills and experience in working with the media and/or
fundraising.
The postholder will join a team of eight people covering a variety of
functions. The small, committed staff work cooperatively in many areas but
this postholder will work most closely with staff overseeing the projects
that we fund, our surveying and monitoring of mammals and insect species,
our outreach and educational activity, our annual wildlife events programme
and our conservation work on our own sites and on the conservation priority
species that we look after.
The post reports to the Chief Executive. The salary will be in the region
of £21 000 p.a. depending upon experience.

Job description
Media and promotional work
• Working with a range of internal and external colleagues to
identify potential stories of media interest
• Writing and sending out regular media releases as agreed with the
Chief Executive and other staff to raise awareness of the work of the Trust
• Responding to media and other enquiries
• Liaising with journalists who cover wildlife and environmental
issues bringing to their attention stories of particular interest
• Developing professional relationships with journalists to encourage
accurate media coverage of Trust work and to encourage them to turn to the
Trust as a natural port of call for information
• Identify appropriate media spokespeople to back up media releases
and on occasion to take on the role as spokesperson
• Organising media related events such as launches of reports or
other activities, media briefings, photo shoots etc
• Attending and participating in outreach events, such as county
shows, festivals and open days, to promote the Trust and its work
Fundraising duties
• Developing and maintaining relationships with the trustees of grant
making trusts with a view to identifying the most appropriate ones to apply
to for funds
• Preparing imaginative, thorough and convincing bids to grant making
trusts and other bodies in liaison with relevant staff
• Contributing ideas for other creative fundraising ideas which will
both raise the profile of the charity and contribute to income generation
and media coverage
Other duties
• Monitoring media coverage with the help of a cuttings agency
• Devising appropriate means of monitoring your own the success in
media and fundraising with respect to engaging potential supporters and
actual income generated
• Working within a defined budget and keeping appropriate financial
records
• On occasion assisting in the production of the Trust’s newsletter
and magazine liaising with other staff involved
• Helping with other tasks as advised by the Chief Executive
Person specification
We are looking for someone with preferably all of the following attributes:
• a degree (or equivalent) in environmental (or other relevant)
science
• a good understanding of environmental and wildlife issues, though
not necessarily specialist knowledge
• experience of working with the media in some capacity, preferably
in a press office
• strong oral and written communication skills - ability to ‘sell’ a
story (eg to journalists or to potential funders)
• ability to and experience of conversing comfortably with a wide
range of people with very differing interests in the environment and
conservation
• able to demonstrate imaginative and innovative ideas for
promotional work
• flexibility to work in a small team, to be able to travel to and
attend events some of which may require overnights away from home and/or
weekend work
• willingness to take on a variety of challenges with a ‘can do’
attitude
• conscientious and in sympathy with our aims and committed to
working hard to achieve them
• experience in or able to demonstrate an interest in the charitable
sector either through employment or voluntary work
• basic computer literacy
• experience in updating websites or an interest in being trained to
do so
• a clean driving licence
