Hello,
I am afraid this request may be a bit off-topic, so it may be best if
you reply direct to me and I can summarise responses back to the list.
I am organising a conference in the summer in London, Bridges:
Mathematical Connections in Art, Music, and Science
[http://www.lkl.ac.uk/bridges/]. I am trying to bolt on to this event
a 'public communication' element in the form of small book (say 50
pages) and CD-ROM bundle that will be a celebration of
art-in-mathematics and mathematics-in-art by drawing on the most
beautiful images presented in this year's and previous years'
conference proceedings, wrapped around with an impressionistic essay
about 'mathematics and art'. Where possible, the CD will include some
multimedia in the form of 'mathematical music' and video materials.
The idea is that this book/CD will be produced to high quality
production standards (full-colour printing, etc) and will serve as a
resource for the promotion of mathematical culture in the UK (yes,
this has been done quite a few times before, eg. Maths Year 2000, but
the stubborn nature of the lack of appreciation for mathematics in
the UK means that it is always worth doing again :-)). The deal would
be that the funder of the project gives a number of free copies to
the conference to distribute, but has ownership over the final
book/CD to produce as many copies as they wish for whatever 'public
communication' activity they wish. They also get the chance to host a
VIP launch event of the book/CD during the conference to point up in
the media a (for once) positive contribution to mathematics
appreciation. (Through conference contacts we think we can leverage
some good VIPs to attend.)
I am thinking about major public sector funders for public
communication (but the idea does not quite fit with the funding
schemes that I'm aware of) or 'public good' schemes in big corporates
(say banks).
Thanks for any advice! - Phillip Kent
