Enigma Project Schools Officer
Salary range: £22,774 - £26,402 p.a.
Closing date: 12 noon, Friday 22nd September 2006
The Millennium Mathematics Project, based at the University of Cambridge,
is seeking a graduate in maths, science or a related subject with very
strong communication and presentation skills and real enthusiasm for
sharing the excitement of mathematics to take on the running of our highly
successful Enigma Schools Project after the existing postholder, Claire
Ellis, leaves in October 2006.
This is a demanding but exciting job with considerable potential for
development. The Enigma Project focuses on codes and codebreaking as a
means of engaging school pupils with maths and the history of maths. The
Schools Officer is responsible for visiting primary and secondary schools
to give talks on the subject, including demonstrating a real WWII Enigma
machine, and to run hands-on workshops involving activities based around
the history of mathematics and cryptography. The job holder also gives
occasional talks to adult audiences, and there may be opportunities to
develop new workshop topics too.
The successful applicant will have a degree in maths, one of the sciences
or a related subject, must have exceptional communication and public
speaking skills, and, most importantly, must be able to enthuse and inspire
audiences ranging in age from 10 to adult. You will have a demonstrable
strong interest in education and promoting the public understanding of
maths and science. Some prior experience of working with school-age
children in an educational context is essential, and you must be able to
adapt your presentation, content and materials as appropriate for a range
of ages and audiences.
The post involves considerable travel throughout the UK and applicants must
have a full driving licence. Good organisational skills are also essential.
The post is offered for a fixed term of one year in the first instance,
and salary is in the range £22,774 to £26,402 (University of Cambridge
Grade 6). The post carries an annual leave entitlement of 30 days plus
public holidays and is pensionable. Appointment will be conditional on a
CRB enhanced background check not revealing any bar to working with
children.
