This year's conference contains sessions in three strands: engaging to
inspire and educate, engaging to involve and engaging through the media
and PR. Highlights of the Education strand are detailed below. The
conference will provide an opportunity to hear about current and future
developments as well as providing excellent networking opportunities.
The conference takes place on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 July and
bookings will close on the 7 July. To book visit

The role of science communicators in supporting science education
The session will take the STEM mapping exercise as a background and look
to discuss the new opportunities it highlights to support science
learning, answering question such as - what are the current trends and
issues of effectiveness, how can we capture and share good practice, and
identifying constraints, opportunities and linkages?
SPEAKERS: Dr Derek Bell, Chief Executive, Association of Science
Education, Phillip Greenish, Chief Executive, Royal Academy of
Engineering, Debra Dance, DFES, Daniel Sandford Smith, Education
Manager, Institute of Physics
Role model schemes - inspiring the next generation of scientists
The session will explore what makes a good role model for science. A
number of schemes have been running in recent years. Many still
highlight a gap in matching the need for and availability of role
models. Who are we creating role models for and what makes a good role
model? How can we measure the impact of these schemes?
SPEAKER: Diane Beddoes
PANEL: Liz Wilcox, SEAs and Project Development Manager, SETNET, Dr
Joanna Coleman, Public Engagement Manager, Engineering and Physical
Sciences Research Council, Dominic McDonald, Senior Science in Society
Manager, RCUK Science in Society Unit, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Managing
Director, Science Innovation
Measuring the impact of informal engagement activities
The session will explore current and future approaches to evaluating and
measuring the impact of informal engagement activities. It will
highlight new moves to create standard evaluation templates and explore
how we can collate and share evaluation and good practice.
SPEAKERS: Fay Sullivan & Joe Cullen, The Tavistock Institute, Pat
Langford, Operations Director, SETNET
Changing the face of science - widening participation in enrichment
activities
The session will explore new approaches to diversity, highlighting
recent projects and current thinking. The session will provide
opportunities to explore how we measure the impact of diversity work,
what we consider success and how we can ensure momentum in this area is
kept up.
SPEAKERS: Dr Anil Kumar, Director, Education & Policy, The Engineering
and Technology Board, Professor Salim Al-Hassani, Chairman of the Board,
Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation
Moving up the ladder of learning - monitoring the impacts of progression
projects
The session will explore projects that look to build STEM skills at
multiple levels of learning. It will look at how we can monitor the
impacts of these activities as pupils progress through the education
system by showcasing two current innovative projects in the area.
Participants will be given the opportunity to discuss how thinking from
these projects can help shape the work they do.
SPEAKERS: Annette Smith, Director of Regions, The BA, David Hellier,
Strategy Manager (Water), Energy & Utility Skills
Integrating formal and informal science education
The session will showcase current projects being undertaken by science
communicators that aim to link formal and informal science education.
What are the benefits of better linkages, how can we create them and
what experiences can we learn from?
SPEAKER: Rosalind Mist, Project Manager, Ecsite-uk
