Hello there
Apologies to those of you not interested in this zoo project. To anyone
curious about exhibits on animal sensing:
Coincidentally, I currently have an exhibit in London Zoo - in the butterfly
house to be exact. I've used optical flux - a measure of how much the scene is
changing from moment to moment - and am using it to trigger sounds.
Butteflies, like other insects, use optical flux to navigate and sense speed
and movement. I have composed some music that plays continually in the
butterfly house. This is controlled by a webcam pointing at a buttefly feeding
table. When a butterfly flaps its wings in front of the camera, my system
notices the sudden rise in optical flux and uses this immediately to make the
music 'flutter'.
I was trying to make a soundtrack for the butterflies that had something to do
with insect intelligence. Effectively, my system is sonifying butterfly
movement, using a visual processing trick that's inspired by insect vision.
Incidentally, I'm interested in this system because it can be exploited in the
field of robotics. ...And 'cos it sounds nice.
If you would like to know more about this, do get in touch off-list.
Bye
Sarah
