Across the UK and Ireland, people involved in participation on issues
relating to controversial areas of knowledge have made important
contributions to grassroots-based democracy in recent years. This "weekend
x-change" will provide an opportunity for people who have played all sorts
of different roles within participatory processes, or who have studied or
funded them, to share their perspectives and learn from each other.
We have already had interest from of people from a wide range of
backgrounds, including:
. Members of the 2003 GM Jury, 2005 NanoJury, 2002 DIY Jury, the Royal
Society's 2002-03 Science in Society workshops, the National Consumer
Council's 2001 workshops on food and farming, and a range of other
action/research initiatives.
. Social researchers, including those studying participation as part
of the Economic and Social Research Council's Science in Society programme.
. Facilitators and participatory action researchers - working on
local, national and international scales, particularly from initiatives at
the interface of technical or scientific knowledge and democracy.
. Policy-makers and opinion-formers from various areas of science,
community development and participation.
The objective of the workshop is to devise a provisional set of principles
and examples of working practices for participatory processes that aim to
co-produce or validate knowledge and technology between all parts of
society, particularly including those sectors traditionally excluded from
power. These will be published on-line as A PEOPLE'S HANDBOOK ON POWER Part
1: Scientific Expertise and Technology - a collaboration between the four
sponsors of the workshop, as part of an on-going cycle of reflection and
action.
