We warn all students not to bring phones and PDAs into exams, and we
used to make them switch off and hand them all in before the exam starts.
This was very tedious and we now make them switch off and place in an
envelope on the desk in front of them. Up to 80% do this.
Anyone found with a phone still in their pocket - usually detected when
it rings - can be accused of cheating. Some do indeed have more than one!
