Following on from John Wells reference to Trager & Smith and the h
analysis of long vowels and diphthongs, analyses of other languages
were similar. In German /r/ was said to have a postvocalic realization
as a lower-mid unrounded vowel (similar to the southern British vowel
in 'cup'). This despite the presence among the vowel phonemes of a
schwa. See for example Moulton, Sound patterns of English and German.
