Dear Jane
The use of octaves (semitones) is preferable because it relates directly to
the listener's subjective perception of pitch range, and has the further
advantage of making it easier to cross compare (normalise) between speakers.
The use of Hz gives a physical definition to pitch range, but is
particularly confusing if you are comparing speakers with different average
pitches.
Laryngograph's Speech studio provides you with both options.
