Our first recent (post 1992) PhD in design went to a student (Graham
Whiteley) with really terrific drawing skills who used that talent as an
analytical resource to understand anatomical joints and analogous joint
mechanisms. You can see his thesis, with the drawings, here:
http://www.chrisrust.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/academic/resources/whiteley.htm.
One of our most recent students (Lucy Lyons, some of you may have met
her at Wonderground) is also a great drawist who is carrying out
research into how delineation by drawing can enhance understanding of
pathology.
Some of our other PhD students are not so talented at drawing, their
strengths tend to lie in 3D making or interaction thinking.
