Dear Ken:
At some occasions, I have tried to persuade conference organizers to
put the discussion session in the center stage while submitted papers
will be presented in a poster format (and included in the conference
proceedings). The idea is that several papers are grouped together to
be discussed on a topic (or topics) common to them, without
reading/presenting but going directly into questions and discussions.
The participants in that session will have already had the chance to
look into the poster or paper in the proceedings before the actual
discussion starts. The papers are published in the proceedings, so
the requirements for travel funding are met.
I have not yet succeeded so far in persuading this to become the major format.
Another type of discussion I remember is what is called
"confessions," which means an already established researcher will
present his/her past successes and failures, and (possibly) younger
researchers raise arguments. It will go smoother with some glasses of
beer/wine.... Perhaps this one is similar to the Gordon Research Conferences.
