Thanks for your short cut to the kind of information I was seeking. I
want a method for assessing the next academic year. I have a copy of
Boud's "The Challenge of Problem Based Learning" on my desk. Your
references are more on the mark. I feel that assessment is the key to
design education. To evolve design education you need to start with what
is being assessed. To communicate learning objectives to students you
need them to understand the assessment methods.
A few points:
Echoing Gunnar: One problem with traditional design project assessment,
assuming it's done well, is that it happens at the end of a project,
normally the end of a semester, all at once. Up to that point a student
may not know how they are doing. Due to the nature of ID projects, the
thing to be assessed, often appears at the last minute. Good scholarship
and other qualities like, diligence and team working aren't evaluated.
Traditional design project assessment is done badly, in my opinion, when
it focusses on the result instead of the design process. Ranulph: I
think students could participate more effectively in assessing the
"subjective" design concept or the result, but less successfully in
assessing design process and the other criteria mentioned in my last
email. Remember many undergrad students are clueless, as I was at that
age. Students look to their "wiser" (ha) teachers for guidance, they
expect answers from us, and sometimes we just have to provide them.
I could introduce new assessment methods in a soft way: As feedback that
doesn't count for marks. I think I'm looking for a mix if methods to
act, both, as ongoing feedback / learning, and for assessment / grading.
