DOCAM ’06

DOCAM ’06 is the fourth Annual meeting of the Document Academy, an international network of scholars, artists and professionals in various fields interested in the exploration of the document as a useful approach, concept and tool in Sciences, Arts, Business, and Society. 
The aim of  The Document Academy is to create an interdisciplinary space for experimental and critical research on documents in a wide sense, drawing on traditions and experiences around the world. It is organized and co-sponsored by The Program of Documentation Studies, University of Tromso, Norway and School of Information, University of California, Berkeley.

We are delighted to announce that the key-note speaker this year will be Professor Geoffrey C. Bowker, Executive Director for the Center for Science, Technology and Society, Santa Clara University. Professor Bowker has for long been prominent in the multi-disciplinary field of information, communication, and documentation crossing humanities, social sciences and technical and natural sciences. It is clearly demonstrated by his newest book: Memory Practices in the Sciences, MIT Press 2006. 
Professor Bowker will give his Keynote Address at the end of the conference and comment on the core questions and challenges for document research in the future. 


A preliminary program will be available online April 12 on the site of The Document Academy at http://thedocumentacademy.hum.uit.no/ 
The conference will run from Friday October 13, 9am, and end Sunday October 15 at noon. In order to keep the open ended discussion atmosphere of previous DOCAMs  alive along with a growing number of participants, we have decided to have only plenary sessions and a relatively limited, but well selected number of presentations.

Call for proposals of papers, presentations and demonstrations:

Scholars, developers, artists and practitioners working with document research and development are invited to submit proposals for full and short papers or other kinds of presentation for plenary sessions and exhibits as soon as possible and not later than by May 19 2006:

I: Full  papers for plenary sessions on :

- DOCUMENT THEORY (general issues)
- DOCUMENT ANALYSIS (case-studies and methodological issues)

Each author or group of authors will have 45 minutes at disposal including discussion, allowing 8 papers in total, 4 in each category. Each paper should be appr. 7500 words or less if other media are used, but no less than 6000 words. The full paper should be delivered  by September 30 2006 in pdf format or other format if necessary.

I I: Short papers (theoretical and empirical works in progress) for plenary sessions in:
Document research (theory, methods, case-studies)

Each author or group of authors will have 30 minutes at disposal including discussion, allowing 10 short presentations. The order of presentations will be arranged according to themes as much as possible. Each short paper should be appr. 3600 words or less if other media are used, but no less than 2400 words. The short paper should be delivered September 30 2006 in pdf format or other format if necessary.

III : Proposals for presentation of Ph.d. projects 
There will be a special session for Ph.d. projects with 15 minutes presentation, 5 minutes comment from commentator and 10 minutes open discussion. There is room for 6 projects in total. Each presentation should be appr. 3600 words or less if other media are used, but no less than 2400 words. The short paper should be delivered September 30 2006 in pdf format or other format if necessary.

IV : Proposals for demonstrations and exhibits
Small demonstrations and exhibits during Friday and Saturday in South Hall, room 110. The demonstrators and exhibitors are required to provide all necessary equipment themselves, unless other arrangements have explicitly been made with the conference organizer. 

Conference language is English

All proposals must include :
Description :
- a short verbal description of the work to be presented at maximum 500 words
- Explanation of how the work would be presented (verbal presentation, powerpoint, video, performance, demonstration, exhibit etc. and equipment needs)

-  names of all contributors , 
-  address,  including email contacts and URL
-  Up to 5 keywords 

Proposals should be submitted electronically in PDF format to [log in to unmask] as soon as possible and at the latest May 19th. 2006

Receipt will be confirmed within one week. In the selection of proposals based on peer review, one will favor a variety of themes, crossing different fields, disciplines and cultures. Decisions will be announced no later than June 9th. 2006.
