Hi Tracie
Lots of ifs and buts here
Many do a paper screen and if symptoms progress to spirometry
Here I do paper screen and spirometry on all working with respiratory sensitisers and if problems/ symptoms reported serial peak flows are indicated/ performed
HSE provide good advice on this which we base our screen forms on
Hope this helps and all is well with you

Hi Fiona
Nice to see you on the JISCMAIL!!
Thanks for the advise and this message is extended to all who have responded. Your response has been very helpful.
Your point Fiona, regarding unnecessary screening is a very good one as we all know that time is very tight, however, others' thoughts regarding if in doubt screen anyway are also valid. I think we need to consider the way in which we are obtaining the information as in quetionnaires, such like pre emp screening (which has been the subject of my thoughts for some time now - assignemtn topic) and the reliability of that information.....oh, so much to consider to ensure that we get it right!!!!
When I come up with a suitable programme, I will let you know how it goes.
Hows the house coming on?
regards, Tracie

Hi Tracie,
It's interesting to see Ruth's response which does mention carrying out spirometry on those who have symptoms. We recently heard from a chest consultant who advised that a questionnaire is all that is necessary for routine health surveillance, and only carry out the spirometry of those who have symptoms. It is very unlikely that you will get a positive spirometry who's had a negative questionnaire (when screening for occupational asthma). I don't think i would be alone in saying that we have been carrying out the full screen when more often than not it's been unnecssary. Would anyone else agree?
Regards
Fiona

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] spirometry
Dear list
I wondered if anyone has a or is aware of a specific list of substances used / environments accessed in relation to working practise that warrants spirometry screening?
Do others screen pro actively or just as and when required? I am talking about technology staff who are doing anything from marine and shipping to motor vehicle to carpentry.
If there is a specific list that requires this screening, I would be very grateful if someone could pass it on.
Kind Regards
Tracie
