Hi Jacqui
Whilst you are undergoing this project I think it is a good time to open up for discussion for the group some NMC reference to PDR/appraisals in their document related to standards for all those responsible for assessing practice ( there are four stages , registrant, mentor (only a sign off mentor can sign off fit for practice), practice teachers (minimum requirement to sign off scphn) and teacher
This document states that by September 2007 all assessors for SCPHN's will have to be practice teachers
For those of you who have students ( and I know this is from sheer dedication to OH and developing the profession) the document is a developmental framework from which you can map your previous experience and qualifications, identify your learning requirements and provide evidence in your current cpd portfolio to demonstrate practice teacher competence)
However apart from the difficulties of achieving the standards for OH mentors/practice teachers there is another change where by the NMC state it is the responsibility of the "placement provider(employer)" to maintain a register of suitable qualified practice teachers/mentors and suggest this task can be easily achieved during annual appraisal when looking at PDR's etc.
Now this is obviously going to be difficult even for those within the NHS ( whom I presume had been in mind when written) as most placement for nurse courses are within the NHS. However for OH ( and some private care facilities offering placements and some school nurses together with the expected new social enterprises) the employer is not going to be interrested in
a) maintaining a register or
b) ensuring cpd in an area which initially looks like has no business value ( the argument is in the moral value, esteem, personal development leading to improved psychsocial wellbeing of the expereinced OH Nurse suitable to guide and support a student OHN)
It is important that we embrace the new standards as they cannot be argued with in relation to the ideal but lets discuss the reality of how OH can implement them and identify the difficulties which the NMC need to be informed of.

Take a look at the Circular 20/0006 Standards to support teaching an dlearning in practice. (the addressee includes independant sector employers, I wonder who these are?)

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] personal development plans
hi all
i am looking at our personal development plans(PDR) and reviews(PDR's) and
currently they are HR/business based and i want to focus on OH nurse
development rather than ...what "the nurse" will do for the business.
As the PDR is a major factor in salary review.is anyone willing to
share????
also just a query
do those who offer health MOTS including finger prick cholesterol or blood
sugar testing obtain consent and at what point is referral back to GP's
made? i've been asked about offering this service...i'm aware of the
background arguements ie dont check unless you have a follow up etc, i'm
just putting a line of defence together!!
