hello
the current artcile in this weeks BMJ (Jefferson 333(7574);912) raises food
for thought about the value and effectiveness of a flu vaccination
programme.
Like others a vast amount of time and resources is spent each year on this
form of 'preventative treatment', yet I am still to be convinced of it's
worth and cost-effectiveness. To gain accurate and valid figures of those
who have sickness absence because of the flu, and then to cross reference
with if they've been vaccinated or not is easier said than done, but the
nature of current healthcare issues and environment is that staff are
reluctant to have the vaccination, and some actually see a 2 week "break"
with the flu as a relief from the daily grind on the wards.
We can't force staff to have the jab, and their is reluctance. Have others
audited the cost-effectiveness of a flu vaccination programme or has
someone had the courage to call time on this practice??
I know someone researched this on my degree course but I no longer have a
contact for them (perhaps they're subscribed to this list??)
regards
Glenn
